Beginning Thursday February 1st, The Flying Pig and WildTale Restaurants will no longer use plastic straws and offer Paper Straws on request.
It’s estimated the world uses 1 billion unrecyclable plastic straws a day – 500 million in the United States alone – an untold number of which end up in the ocean, polluting the water and coastlines and posing a deadly threat to sea turtles and other marine animals.
Plastics, including straws, continue to clog our oceans, with researchers suggesting there are more than 5 trillion pieces of it swirling in the water. Smaller pieces appear to be getting eaten by fish and travelling up the food chain.
Things to consider:
Straws represent “a clear example of completely unnecessary single use plastic that is used for an average of just 20 minutes then discarded,” write the organizers of The Final Straw Cornwall campaign.
“Every straw on the planet right now will outlive everyone reading these words.”
In an effort to do our part to curb this growing problem, we at The Flying Pig will start with something small, such as stopping the use single-use plastic straws.
Please help us in our quest to keep our coastlines and oceans clean and sustainable.
